Mixed feelings about this one. Tempted to give a 2 because I did NOT have a good experience...but it was due to what was probably an honest mistake rather than bad cooking or unpleasant employees, so I'm giving a 3 because I do think there's potential here.
Anyway, I came in to grab lunch for carryout after a coworker recommended this place to me. It's in a gas station and took the old spot of Boarhog's after they moved into their own space just up the road.
They were pretty busy when I arrived. I thiiiink you can maybe order online, but the online menu looked pretty drastically different than the one in-store (waaaaay more items to choose from online), so I'd be careful.
At any rate, you order at the counter inside. There's two smaller tables and two really long tables; maybe room for 25-30 people max but you'd have to really like one another!
The lady at the register was SUPER nice, so that's a plus. She repeated every customer's order back to them before she wrote it down, which is great to avoid misunderstandings.
I wasn't sure what to order when I got to the counter. I really wanted some nachos, but that wasn't on the in-store menu, so I went with chicken and rice instead. The employee asked if I wanted queso blanco on top, to which I agreed emphatically -- I was glad she asked, because I had assumed it would come on there automatically, as it does at other Mexican restaurants where I've had it before. I also got a glass bottle of Pepsi, since their fountain drink machine wasn't working. My meal was $15.50, which I thought was pretty dang pricy.
I sat down to wait, and I guess this is where my problems started. It took a pretty long time for my food to come out. In their defense, there was a party ahead of me with an absolutely absurdly large order, but I still really had hoped to get out faster than I did. I guess that's why you order online.
When my order came out to me, I took it and rushed out to my car to get back home so I could eat. I drove the 15 minutes or so home and nursed my Pepsi along the way. I dunno if it's imported Mexican Pepsi (kinda like the "Mexican Cokes" that a lot of folks, myself included, like) or what, but it didn't taste like regular Pepsi. It was lacking that kind of signature citrusy punch -- it was just *sweet,* like a Coke. Of course, if you're less picky about Coke/Pepsi preferences, this may not bother you.
When I got home, there was no cutlery in my to go bag. Fine for me since I have utensils at home, but would've been annoying if I'd gone back to work and not had any way to eat my meal.
Here's my main problem....there wasn't even a spoonful of queso in the box with my food. It was JUST chicken and rice. Granted, it was an INSANE amount of food. Two meals, easily, which makes the price sting a little less...though personally I'd rather have smaller portions and lower pricing. BUT...I mainly came to this restaurant because I wanted to mainline queso into my body, lol. And I didn't get any queso, even though I asked for it. :( It was too far and too late and I'm too non-confrontational to drive back to the restaurant to try to get it fixed, so my lunch was...not what I wanted at all. In fairness to the restaurant, both the chicken and the rice were well seasoned and flavorful. The chicken was cooked well, though the rice was a little mushy. But I WANT MY QUESO, DARN IT. Sigh. I'm still craving it.
I don't eat Mexican food that often, so I'll probably only be back if my coworker who loves this place so much wants to go. Still, I think there's room for a pretty good experience here, but check your order first!
